Almost Real

Fruit has long been an essential motif in the history of still life painting. From the Dutch masters’ bowls of grapes to Cézanne’s apples and pears, these images carry with them layered meanings—abundance, mortality, and the simple pleasures of daily life. Among fruits, pears hold a special grace: familiar yet elegant, earthy yet refined. Many collectors consider a still life of fruit to be the cornerstone of a home gallery.

Almost Real draws you in with that tradition, while offering a more intimate reflection. Three pears rest atop soft fabric, their forms modeled with care and adorned with tiny pearls that glint in the light. The contrast between crisp pyrography linework and soft, painterly oil edges creates a realism that breathes—objects both solid and dreamlike. The ivory backdrop cradles the fruit like precious gems, setting the scene in a space that feels timeless and contemplative.

This piece, however, carries a deeper story. As part of my current collection on exhibit at Ponshop in Downtown Fredericksburg, Almost Real continues my exploration of the emotional landscape of motherhood. The three pears represent the three babies I’ve dreamt of having. Today, I have two children. This painting honors that third dream—whether or not it ever becomes reality. It remains beautiful in its own way: a dream that lives quietly in my heart.

As I worked, I found myself reflecting on how dreams and daily life are always intertwined. We celebrate what we have, yet it is our aspirations—our “almosts”—that ignite our days and give us something to reach toward. Almost Real is my visual meditation on that balance: where gratitude meets longing, and where the dream itself becomes a work of art.
