This piece is a rare window into my process...a moment captured in my sketchbook before it transforms into its final life as a woodburned and oil-painted panel. Created digitally as a detailed concept sketch, it was designed for Danilo Orofino and his beautiful Italian restaurant in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Danilo’s roots are in Sicily, where his beloved mother rests, and I wanted this work to feel like a love letter to that place.

The scene holds the hush of an early morning on a Sicilian beach. Everyone still sleeps; only the seagulls are awake. Striped umbrellas and beach chairs remain from the day before, patiently waiting for sunbathers to return. In the distance, the ancient coast cradles a small cemetery where generations rest eternally. The sky is brushed with faint lemon and rose, seashells are scattered like treasures in the sand, and a small boat rests quietly ashore.

When an artist builds a piece like this, the sketch is where all the details are first solved...composition, perspective, mood. It’s the quiet planning before the commitment of final materials. In my case, that final stage is pyrography and oil paint on basswood, but this sketch is the seed from which the finished work grows.

For collectors and viewers, Sole di Polermo offers the rare chance to experience that first, intimate stage...the breath before the brush touches wood...when the idea is still as tranquil as the scene itself.
